ST. AUGUSTINE LIGHTHOUSE

The original St. Augustine Lighthouse was located on Anastasia Island and fell into the ocean in 1880. Today many guests climb the 219 steps to the top of this historic landmark which was built in 1873. It is said that three young girls lost their lives when a rail car they were playing in toppled into the ocean. Over the years, guests and workers have heard children’s laughter coming from an unknown source. A worker has seen a former keeper of the lighthouse smoking his pipe on the outside grounds. Many local legends of people who have passed in or around the lighthouse have been shared over the years.
